A special-effects laden film based on a comic book is normally something I wouldn’t touch with a bargepole. However last summer, a friend who knows my taste said I would like Iron Man because of Robert Downey Jr‘s performance and she was right.
The same is true of Iron Man 2. Yet again Downey does not take himself too seriously and is equally good with pithy one-liners as Iron Man is with his vast array of weapons. As a result the movie made me laugh a lot more than some so-called comedies I have recently seen.
I am pretty sure I’m not the target audience for the Iron Man franchise as I would prefer less action – although it is well done – and more of the wit.
The sequel introduces an array of new over-the top characters. I particularly enjoyed Sam Rockwell playing rival arms manufacturer Justin Hammer and Scarlett Johansson as corporate lawyer turned catsuit-wearing-dirty-martini-drinking-superagent. Any film with a woman who kicks ass at martial arts gets my vote and encourages me to try a bit harder in my own training – although I can’t imagine ever getting into that catsuit.
